The Re-enactment ofTHE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES Since about the middle of the 20th century, a special event has been taking place from time to time which is called the Re-enactment of the Hippocratic Oath. It is solemn twenty-minute ceremony which was first performed in April 1952 by students of the Hippocrateion High School of Kos at the Asclepieion of Kos in honor of some European doctors who were then visiting the birthplace of Hippocrates. Re-enactment of the Oath This ceremony is held at the Asclepieion.Six to twelve maidens in white, carrying baskets, descend slowly and rythmically the third set of steps of the Asclepieion in two lines, while in their midst a flute-player(s) dressed in tunic play a rhythmical piece of music.Last follows a man wearing a wreath, holding a parchment with the text of the Oath on it and is accompanied by two maidens dressed in white.When the basket-bearers reach the second terrace of the Asclepieion they scatter flowers on the altar of Asclepios, and take their position around the altar, where the crowned man, in an evocative atmosphere, recites the Oath of Hippocrates.
