5. THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH.
This truly incomparable intellectual/humanitarian text, 2400 years old, still inspires and sets ethical standards for the conduct of physicians today.
In mid-20th century, some historians of medicine argued that Hippocrates must not have been the author of the Oath. Their argument was based on parts of the Oath contradicting elements of books attributed to him (such as the reference to abortion) and on linguistic comparisons of ancient texts of different periods. They concluded that the Oath must have been written by disciples of Hippocrates, approximately one generation after his deaths, who were influenced by the Pythagorean philosophy.
