International Hippocratic

Foundation of Kos.

6. TARGETS OF THE IHFK:
- CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONVENTION CENTRE
- THE HIPPOCRATIC LIBRARY
- THE MUSEUM OF MEDICINE.

The construction of the various entities of the Foundation is expected to be budgeted in different ways.

The convention centre will comprise a large auditorium and its auxiliary areas, and will be budgeted from money that the IHFK hopes to secure during the next three years from state grants and bank loans, and from donations.

The said auditorium has already been designed for a 2000-seat capacity, with all the necessary facilities of a modern theatre. It is to operate as an independent entity within the overall complex of the IHFK and to host a number of conventions each year. Additionally, smaller areas have been designed to accommodate meetings of smaller groups.

The other two projects are expected to be funded and materialized gradually - in accordance with and in proportion to the active interest of the Greek and the international medical communities.

The Museum of Medicine is planned to be in units, built and organized by discipline, through bilateral agreements between the IHFK and each corresponding international medical society. Already, such an agreement has been signed between the IHFK and the international Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (see chapter 8: KOSIFOS).

Finally, the Hippocratic Library, which is envisioned to contain books and journals on the History and the Ethics of Medicine, is planned to be developed in collaboration with the Aegean University of Greece and with all interested Greek or foreign Foundations, Societies or Universities.

7. THE DESIGN OF THE CONVENTION CENTRE.

The design of the Convention Centre was undertaken by the well known firm of Doxiadis Associates. The architectural and structural plans are ready. The IHFK will be in a position to invite tenders from interested construction firms, as soon as the necessary funds are secured. The total cost is estimated at 1.1 billion drachmas (US $ 1 = 148 drs. - summer of 1988).

According to the design:
a. the volume is toned down taking advantage of the sloping grounds of the plot, to accommodate the various levels of the floor of the theater.
the theater area is divisible into two or four smaller areas by retractable soundproof panelling, thus making it possible to hold one large or two to four smaller conventions simultaneously.

Patios are also provided - a characteristic of traditional Greek architecture - which are integral parts of the complex. Thus, the convention areas can, during the summer months, be converted into semi-open areas.

Last, but not least, the complex is served by a system of pedestrian walkways separated from vehicular roads, in order to offer to the visitors the facility for easy strolls in the grounds of the IHFK plot, as well as pleasant approaches to the building complex.

A special tree shaded 1 km long path will connect the site of the convention centre to the site of the ancient Asclepieion.

8. KOSIFOS - MUSEUM FOR THE HISTORY OF OTORHINOLARINGOLOGY.

The International Federation of Otorhinolaringological Societies has signed an agreement with the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos whereby the IHFK has provided the required area within the IHFK plot, free of cost, in order that the IFOS may construct their museum there.

The details of this agreement are given on page 26. It has been called Project KOSIFOS and has as its manager, Professor Leonidas Manolidis, of the University of Thessaloniki.

The design of the museum, by Architects OAM, Thessaloniki, Greece, is well under way, while efforts for its organization have already started in many countries.

9. FINANCING OF THE PROJECTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONVENTION CENTRE AND THE HIPPOCRATIC LIBRARY.

The IFHK is a non-profit organization and expects to raise the required money for the projects from Greek public funds/grants and from societies as well as from other interested organizations, individuals, etc.

An application to the Greek state and a bank for grants and loans was made in the late spring of 1988 and their answer is pending.

The estimated construction costs are:
Convention Centre: 1.1 billion drs
Hippocratic Library: 300 million drs (includes cost of books etc.) (summer 1988 US $ 1 = 148 drs.).
In recognition of all donations, the IFHK has decided to open a Donator's Book where the names titles of all donators - individuals, organizations, medical societies - and the amounts donated will be registered and the book will be placed in the entrance of the existing building and in the lobby of the convention centre, when completed, for any visitor to see.

Additionally, the IHFK has decided that for larger amounts of donations, i.e. more than € 100 from individuals and more than € 1.000 from organizations and societies, to issue statements of thanks addressed to each such donator, marking the exact amount donated. Each such statement will be sealed and signed by the president and the treasurer of the IHFK.

The donations may be sent to: IHFK, P.O. Box 18213, Athens 11610, Greece.

Titles that the Foundation has decided to bestow on donators, and to write in the Donator's Register Book and in the statements of Thanks for individuals or organizations, are:

€ 1.001-10.000 - - - Donators
